DIY: Pressed Leaf Plant Art

As you know, I always like to try new ways of making art. Pressed leaves are making a comeback in the art world, and they evoke decades and centuries past when flowers were pressed into books to preserve them and then turned into keepsakes.

The embossed flowers and leaves have a classic appeal, so I thought I’d experiment and make some greenery on a black background. I’ve seen pressed flowers on Etsy on white backgrounds or in transparent frames. The black background accentuates the greenery so beautifully that I chose black art paper for this project.

To create your own, the supply list is short and the steps are easy! You will need 9×12” black mixed media art paper (also available here); a set of pressed green leaves; acid-free memory glue; tweezers; a frame of choice.

Make sure to use acid-free glue and paper so the pressed leaf art will last for years. I found mine at Michael’s Clearance, but you can also find similar glue at craft stores or online in the scrapbooking section.

This is a slow and meditative art project, arranging the leaves and then slowly gluing them one by one onto the paper.

I cleaned them up in Photoshop and are now available for digital download at my print shop, printable in a variety of sizes from 11×14 inches to 24×30 inches.

They are available in the plant collection or as a pair in the Etsy shop.
