Hello everyone! I came back from a trip to Florida and we had a great vacation and I felt so relaxed. I got a question from a teenage reader about to go to college asking what dorm essentials are. My daughter lived in the dorm for a year last year. I remember a lot of the things we bought for her, but she also reminded me of some of the items she loved since she went through this experience.

Last year we shopped at Dormify and PB Teen, as well as at Bed Bath & Beyond, Target and Walmart. Thankfully, her dorm accepts Amazon packages, so that’s a huge help. Be sure to research the mailroom at your child’s college to see what can be mailed!

For kids living at home, it’s easier to collect back-to-school supplies locally, but for teens going to dorms, it’s best to start preparing early. Today’s post is for teens who are about to enter college. Here are the top must-haves for dorm life!

Shower caddies and shower shoes: These guys carry shampoo, soap, brushes, deodorant, etc. when they go to the showers in the hall every day.

Reusable utensils and food storage containers: Each dormitory has its own rules regarding meals. My daughter really likes having her own cutlery and some food containers so she can save some of her lunch or dinner for late night study.

Reading pillows and personal lamps: Perfect for studying or relaxing in your dorm room, use your laptop and lamp for late night study without disturbing your roommates.

currig mini (or coffee machine) and/or electric kettle: For making coffee, tea, hot chocolate or heating water for making noodles.

mini keurig / auto shut off electric kettle

Duffle bags and under-bed storage: We bought several of these duffle bags and they are great for carrying clothes and personal items to and from across the country, and our daughter uses them for under her bed storage. Placing some storage boxes under the bed is also helpful for storing extra clothes.

Laundry backpack and small vacuum cleaner: Midweek trips to the community laundry and weekend cleanups.

power board tower with USB and C ports & Noise Canceling Headphones: Charge their technology devices and listen intently.

Moisturizer and Immune Booster: It’s harder to keep them healthy in the dorms, so boosters keep them hydrated and help their bodies fight off germs.

Air Purifiers and/or Diffusers: Dorms can be smelly, so use a purifier to keep the air fresh. An essential oil diffuser can also be calming if roommates agree.

Makeup Organizer and Makeup Mirror (For Girls): To get ready in the room, girls need these organizers for all of their favorite products!

LED (or blinking) lights and poster putty: Personalize their room and create a cool environment.

Honorable Mention: For added comfort, consider a mini fridge, a blanket hoodie (fleece with armrests) for chilly nights, and a storage ottoman for extra seating.
